Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays: The Annihilation of Super-Heavy Relics
نویسنده
چکیده
We investigate the possibility that ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) originate from the annihilation of relic superheavy (SH) dark matter in the Galactic halo. In order to fit the data on UHECRs, a cross section of 〈σAv〉 ∼ 10 −26cm2(MX/10 12 GeV) is required if the SH dark matter follows a Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) density profile. This would require extremely large-l contributions to the annihilation cross section. An interesting finding of our calculation is that the annihilation in sub-galactic clumps of dark matter dominates over the annihilations in the smooth dark matter halo, thus implying much smaller values of the cross section needed to explain the observed fluxes of UHECRs.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays from Cosmological Relics
The current status of origin of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) is reviewed, with emphasis given to elementary particle solutions to UHECR problem, namely to Topological Defects and Super-Heavy Dark Matter (SHDM) particles. The relic superheavy particles are very efficiently produced at inflation. Being protected by gauge discrete symmetries, they can be long lived. They are clustering in...

The decay of very heavy metastable relics of the Early Universe can produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in the halo of our own Galaxy. In this model, no Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff is expected because of the short propagation distances. We show here that, as a consequence of the hierarchical build up of the halo, this scenario predicts the existence of small scale anisotropies in ...

We consider the possibility that ultra-high energy cosmic rays originate from the annihilation of relic superheavy darkmatter. We find that a cross section of 〈σAv〉 ∼ 10cm(MX/10 GeV)3/2 is required to account for the observed rate of super-GZK events if the superheavy dark matter follows a Navarro–Frenk–White density profile. This would require extremely large-l contributions to the annihilation...
متن کاملOn heavy Majorana neutrinos as a source of the highest energy cosmic rays
Cosmic ray events beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff represent a great challenge for particle physics and cosmology. We show that the physics of heavy Majorana neutrinos, well defined by their masses, cross sections and lifetimes, could explain the highest energy cosmic rays as a consequence of the galactic annihilation of heavy neutrinos as cold dark matter particles. Galactic nuclei ac...

The phase of inflationary expansion in the early universe produces superheavy relics in a mass window between 10 GeV and 10 GeV. Decay or annihilation of these superheavy relics can explain the observed ultrahigh energy cosmic rays beyond the GreisenZatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. We emphasize that the pattern of cosmic ray arrival directions seen by the Pierre Auger observatory will decide between the...
